Deep Isolation is not proposing to build a borehole repository in an unsaturated zone above a drinking-water aquifer. Moreover, the geology at Yucca Mountain mainly consists of welded basalts, which are highly fractured. The deeper strata, far below the water table at Yucca Mountain, would have to be characterized and evaluated for their suitability as host rocks.
