Detailed costs will vary depending upon the context of each implementation – including the specific geology, volumes, and types of waste to be disposed of, the proximity of disposal sites to the current location of waste, national regulatory requirements and collaboration with the local community to meet their terms. Generally, costs are expected to be less than half of those associated with a centralized mined repository. Regarding interim storage options: While a dry-cask storage facility is less expensive in the short term, a Deep Isolation solution is more cost-effective in the long term.
