Deep Isolation Presents Nuclear Waste Strategies at Industry-Leading Conferences in the U.S. and Australia

Chief Operating Officer Rod Baltzer and Nuclear Engineer Jim Voss introduce Deep Isolation’s innovative approach to nuclear waste disposal at the 2019 Nuclear Decommissioning & Used Fuel Strategy Summit and the 7th International Conference on Recycling and Waste Management

Berkeley, CA – Deep Isolation, a leading innovator in nuclear waste storage and disposal solutions, will feature in two renowned conferences: the 2019 Nuclear Decommissioning & Used Fuel Strategy Summit in Charlotte, NC on September 30th; and the 7th International Conference on Recycling and Waste Management in Melbourne, Australia, October 3-4, 2019.

Rod Baltzer, Chief Operating Officer at Deep Isolation, will join Katrina McMurrian from Nuclear Waste Strategy Coalition, Pamela Gorman-Prochaska from Xcel Energy, and Steve Nesbit from LMNT Consulting to discuss strategies for consolidated interim storage and a permanent repository.  This session “A Calling for Cooperation: Strategies for both Permanent Repository & Consolidated Interim Storage”, will take place during the used fuel track on September 30, 2019, at 2:20 pm local time.

This 6th Annual Nuclear Decommissioning & Used Fuel Strategy Summit is the largest nuclear decommissioning and used fuel meeting point in North America with over 450 key decision-makers and industry leaders in attendance.

Deep Isolation strengthens its global strategy with the participation in the 7th International Conference on Recycling and Waste Management in Melbourne, Australia on October 3-4, 2019.  Jim Voss, one of Deep Isolation’s nuclear engineers, will present his paper, “Development of the Safety Case for Disposal of Radioactive Wastes in Horizontal Boreholes,” during the Hazardous Waste Management track for this event.

“Deep Isolation’s technology of using horizontal directional drilling to store or dispose of nuclear waste deep underground can offer countries with inventories of higher activity waste a compelling and realistic option,” says Jim Voss, a nuclear engineer with over 40 years’ experience in major nuclear and environmental projects. “This type of customizable, modular repository offers safe, geological disposal in a smaller footprint and can be implemented near the point of waste generation to eliminate long-haul transportation.” Jim Voss has carried multiple nuclear technologies from concept through commercial deployment including major field demonstration projects in the U.S., Germany, Spain, and Australia.

The Recycling 2019 conference is dedicated to innovations to the challenges faced by all types of waste management. With speakers representing more than 50 countries, it is the largest assembly of participants from this community. The conference is expected to gather professors, scientists, researchers, and environmental, chemical and civil engineers, as well as other specialists to share innovations in the field of recycling and waste management.

Deep Isolation has gained significant traction this year with a public demonstration of its technology in January, three technical papers published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Energies by MDPI, and most recently its strategic partnership with Bechtel National, Inc., part of the largest engineering and construction company in the United States.
